Museum of Contemporary Art of Caracas
The Museum of Contemporary Art of Caracas, also known as MACCSI abbreviated from its name in Spanish, Museo de Arte Contemporaneo de Caracas Sofia Imber, is one of the best contemporary art museums in Latin America. MACCSI is also highly regarded in Venezuela and one of the most famous and important museums in Caracas. Venezuela’s capital city attracts many travelers interested in learning more about the country and its capital by visiting its many history, science and art museums. MACCSI is no exception.
The Museum of Contemporary Art of Caracas, located in the center of Caracas in Parque Central, is 16,000 square meters in size and features artists new and old, national and international. Admission at The Museum of Contemporary Art is free and the museum is open Tuesday through Sunday from 10 am to 6 pm.
The Museum of Contemporary Art of Caracas, which was founded in 1973, displays thousands of pieces of art including works from Miró, Picasso, Botero and other world-renowned artists. Its permanent collection is made up of almost 3,000 pieces of art and the museum also showcases temporary exhibits throughout the year. The museum holds great importance in featuring local artists as well and you will find pieces from some of Venezuela’s very own artists just steps from Picasso’s coveted sketches. MACCSI not only has a variety of artists but of mediums as well. You will come across everything from sculptures and videos to paintings and photography at MACCSI making it truly an eclectic and impressive museum to visit.
MACCSI as a whole represents the struggle that Sofia Imber, the Centro Simon Bolivar and many others faced in forming Caracas as a city of art. The history of Caracas is undoubtedly present within the walls of MACCSI. Throughout her life, Sofia Imber greatly focused on art and philanthropy and The Museum of Contemporary Art of Caracas was one of her projects, which like many, were very personal and close to her heart.
With so many great artists featured here, it is no wonder why travelers are drawn to the Museum of Contemporary Art of Caracas. Nowhere else in the city will you find such an elaborate collection of art like at MACCSI.
